His Excellency, Bishop Michael Jarrell, responded today to the Supreme Court's ruling effectively changing the definition of "marriage" to be inclusive of same-sex relationships. Please read and take heart, and remember the eighth beatitude: "Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you." (Matt. 5: 10-11) Bishop Jarrell's letter can be found HERE. Thanks be to God for his words affirming the immemorial teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.
Also, our earlier posts on the nature of matrimony (the third part still to follow) might be particularly relevant in the light of all this: Education and the Goods of Matrimony: Part 1 Education and the Goods of Matrimony: Part 2, on the Nature of Matrimony Remember that our duty as Christians is not just to be disgusted with sin, but to pray for the sinners, even those who make themselves enemies of the Church, that Almighty God might be merciful to us all. We are called to do penance in reparation, not only for our own sins (which are many and grievous), but also for the sins of others. May Almighty God be pleased to accept as reparation for all of our sins and those of the whole world, the sacrifice of the Holy and Most Precious Body and Blood of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. For, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans: But God commendeth his charity towards us; because when as yet we were sinners, according to the time, Christ died for us; much more therefore, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son; much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. (Rom. 5:8-10) Parents and Friends of Saint John of the Cross Academy,
We will have our very first Parent Seminar on Saturday, July 11. It will be held at 1 pm in Conference Room #1 at the South Regional Branch of the Lafayette Public Library. The topic of discussion for this seminar will be the tools of learning that are at the heart of classical education. Our guide will be Dorothy Sayers in her essay entitled "The Lost Tools of Learning," which has long been a staple for those attempting to educate children in accord with the best our tradition has given us. You can find the essay here: http://www.gbt.org/text/sayers.html. Please be sure to read well and come with questions and comments on the text. As you all know, we consider these Parent Seminars to be an absolutely essential part of our work with SJCA, since the most important formation each child receives is primarily from the parents themselves. In order to truly serve the parents in this endeavor, we have required that at least one parent of all enrolled families attend each seminar. If for some reason you are unable to attend, please let us know. We will try and arrange a second date to meet and have the discussion with you. (This is not ideal, however, since you will miss out on the wisdom to be gained from hearing the insights of your fellow parents.) We look forward to seeing you all and kicking off what we hope to be a long and fruitful work of helping you to provide the best education possible for your children.
